But then things got heavy...

In 2006 I had a random job opportunity that fell into my lap. Being 19 years old and just moved out of my parents house I was feeling pretty adventurous at the time so I jumped at the opportunity. After a few background checks, some government clearance and a couple plane rides later I found myself at an army base in North Carolina. There were faux Iraqi villages amongst the pines with goats, chickens and bonfires a blaze. Soldiers ready for deployment were taking their final exam of engaging in mock battlefield scenarios with real Iraqi people and I was there to capture it all on video. Looking back at this experience I find myself wishing I was into shooting photos back then because of all the photo gold that was happening around me. At least I had the foresight to bring a disposable camera and here is the grainy proof.

This was my first introduction to the band No Age. They played a special show in the courtyard of The Strand hotel in Huntington Beach for all the surfers who were competing in the US Open. I was ignorant to their sound and had no preconceived notions on how their set would be. All I knew of the band is that they opened for Sonic Youth a couple of times, are Black Flag approved and are on the Sub Pop label. Well, needless to say their credentials don't lie. I was instantly won over by the power and intensity that this duo was able to produce.

Added bonus: they are super nice guys too. If they ever play a show in your hometown don't hesitate and go see them, I know I will.

Special thanks to this guy for getting us access to the surfer heavy show.

MEGA POST: Cala Gonone to Nuoro

We woke up a little early and plotted our sightseeing path of destruction down the eastern coast of the island toward Cala Gonone.

The local granite giants shadowed our flea sized Fiat.

HAY! Pile it high.

We pulled over to appreciated some of the beauty the interior of the island had to offer.

We were careful not to upset any of the locals.

Through the long tunnel that separates the 'Kooks from the Valley' from the 'Aloha Locals'.

Ed let his inner seaman out in Cala Gonone and rented us a fine inflatable craft to explore the Bay of Orosei.

A boat full of "Olds" flew by us and left us bouncing in their prune juice wake.

Our first stop was the Bue Marino cave, the first thing on the list of where not to bring the boat.

A scaffold for land lover access.

Can they fit? Who cares they're old.

Our turn.

One last glimpse of the outside world...

Fur Seals used to give birth here, trust me.

Being from California I couldn't help but to think of the faux caves in Disneyland and Knott's Berry farm but nothing comes close the real thing.

Mom? Dad? Looks about right.

We found ourselves a nice stretch of deserted beach to call our own for the afternoon. Ed anchored the boat and was able to walk back to shore. The sun was nice enough to show its self during this beach play time.

Photo proof of us enjoying the beach to ourselves. This was where I had my first dip in Mediterranean waters. The water was much warmer than the Southern California water back home but the salinity level was a bit higher.

Ed was lurking toward the end of the beach and found a little cave that cut back into the mountain.

Being boys, we instinctively pushed further in.

Dodging obstacles along the way.

With our only light being a focusing aid on a digi-cam we flashed and focused our way through the cave.

The light shining in from the water's entrance offered us a little preview of the beauty the cave had to offer.

We ventured into room 1 that had a surprisingly nice arched entry way.

We blindly flashed our way into room 2 and checked the digi cam for any surprises.

"What! No cappuccinos?! NO!!!"

Without any real light we reached our stopping point at the death hole.

Not bad for a couple of amateur Spelunkers.

We brought back a sand offering for the ladies to see.

We left our private paradise and toured the popular Cala Luna. Not Pictured is a lot of babies, school children, hairy men in foreign swim attire. We were thankful that we found such a secluded beach.

Back on land Ashley found her initials and just had to be cute by it.

Come dinner time we left the coast and pointed the Fiat toward Nuoro.

We stopped and said hello at the Museum MAN in Nuoro where Ed had his show last year.

Deanna stopped and said hello to a French Bulldog puppy that was most adorable.

In between pets, the pup sniffed at the local youth.

"Smells like Axe body spray."

This dog was getting all the attention.

On our was back to Olbia we were listening to some shitty foreign radio. It was right about here we were rewarded with a random Smiths song but lo and behold the tunnel turned Morrissey's croon into dreadful static.

Sardinia's La Maddalena

After arriving at 7am from a overnight boat ride we took a power nap once we got out rooms at the hotel. Here is the view from our room. The mountains on this island reminded me of where I grew up.

Ed rented a nice little Fiat to zip around on the island with.

From Olbia we drove north took the car onto a ferry(not pictured) and shot over to the island of La Maddalena, and island off the main island.

The most fish I saw in the water the whole time I was here in Sardinia.

Here Ed delivers another unwanted scare to Ashley.

We left the main plaza behind and Fiat'ed up some winding roads for a grand view of the island.

From the road we spotted a cute cemetery. Yeah I just said that.

Tasteful death was every where.

The girls approved.

Just in case anyone woke up.

There was a lot more to this island then a cemetery. I neglected to take anymore shots on the island. I put down the digital camera and absorbed the mild climate of the Mediterranean. This was the vacation part of our vacation.

As usual we ended the day with gelato and laughed about stories of pooping pants and the shape of Ed and Deanna's neighbors.

Rome Alone II

Ashley gears up for a deep snooze drowning out the late night "ciaos" and scooter revs.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

We finally made it into the Pantheon.

An open dome so all the prayers are funneled upward toward heaven.

In the case of the Pantheon it goes something like this "Hello?...Gods?"

NO douche bags. Sorry, no praying to the God of Raves or Miami Beach here.

Time keeper and Map boy. Templetons, a well lubricated touring machine.

After the Pantheon we pinballed from cathedral to cathedral.

This one happened to have a painting from one of the masters, Michelangelo.

I'm more of a Donatello fan, I like the purple bandanna and the bo staff.

Will interior designers come here and worship the decor?

We zipped over via train to the port town of Civitavecchia to board a overnight ship to the island of Sardinia.

Holy S*@# The Vatican City

The bunned girls stare in wonder what awaits them in the Vatican City state.

Holy lines formed to enter St. Peter's Basilica.

The door is just to right of the water fountain.

I found my sign and birthday on the ground so I had to stand there.

The view of the square. Pope John Paul II's beatification happened a week before so a lot of banners featuring his greatest hits were still hanging around the columns.

We arranged an appointment to visit the Vatican Muesem.

On the way in.

"Marco!? Are we allowing scepters inside the museum?"

Red hats and 'olds' a plenty.

Inside there were many castrated statues. Maybe the hell hound or the cloaked beast had something to do with this one.

I pointed the camera behind me during the shuffle through some of the museum halls. The look on the ladies faces to the left says it all.

Some sort of safety net was hung in case some of the angels fell down from the frescoes.

Many tour guides decorated their tour scepters with colorful handkerchiefs.

"Please sir no photos!"

"Let the baby slaughter commence!"

"I can't bare to watch."

"What should we do?"

"Kill more?"

"Its cool guys, I'm here!"

Halls for days. Every inch had to be decorated.

The halls were filled with so many tourists it got to the point were statues starting mocking them.

Fresh off the train, we spare no time and hit the streets.

The oldest Gelato factory in Rome was right down the street from our place. Very cheep with very generous scoops.

Ashley starts off confidently chiseling away with her gelato tool.

After a clean up we called it a night and fell into a gelato induced coma.

The gang and I took a day trip up to the hilly city of Lausanne.

Berlin There Done That

Ed ponders the romance of decay on the way to a photo exhibition during our first day in Berlin.

The blocks and wood kinda make this display uncool, sort of like training wheels.

The exhibition space had a classic photo booth, these are becoming harder to find now days.

Last Days of Copenhagen

We scooted by the Danish stock exchange building on the way to visit Christiania, the ultimate commune of Copenhagen.

Peeped/rolled around the mini-ramp inside the hippie compound. Biggity woaaaah!

All sorts of shrineage built where ever. Anything goes here. Note the caboose in the background and under that sheet is an Arc, trust me.

The main drag of Christiania was prohibiting anyone from shooting photos of what they were selling but I will let your imagination run wild. Here is what I think was a school house, or maybe just a house. A lot of buildings here were transformed into living spaces and or whatever space a free spirited individual might need space for...basket weaving? adult finger painting? Hacky sacking?

Ashley soaks in the greenery and the laid back vibe. But not too much soaking, I don't want her growing dreadlocks on me.

The next stop was Tivoli, the epic theme park of Copenhagen. Home to one of the worlds oldest roller coaster that I neglected to take a photo of. I did ride it though, nailed it!

We started the day off with a classic Euro breakfast courtesy of our Hotel...well this was Ashley's plate.

Interneting it up in our room before our train to Berlin. Ain't my bed, my shoes are all over that shit.

We rolled down to the train station, luckily it was right down the street.

Ashley waits for the choo-choo.

The beautiful scenery flew by on our way out of Denmark.

Our train rolled onto a ship to cross over into Germany. Apparently there is a train / ship pact I was not aware of.

LAX to CPH

Ashley and I arrived at LAX 3 hours early for our flight to London, from there we caught a connecting flight to our final destination in Copenhagen, Denmark for the start of our month long Euro barge with the Templetons.

After zipping through a dead international terminal on a Monday we had 2 hours and 45 minutes to kill. Here Ashley handles some last minute style blogger biz...

"No I won't do an American Apparel add, its all classless raunch."

She then tests her new Euro rape whistle.

Nothing left to kill but time itself.

Darkness falls, time for our flight.

So long, Long Beach.

Woke up over an icy Atlantic.

The next morning we met up with the Templetons and went over to the Nils Staerk Gallery to help Ed hang his show.

Once there we did very little helping.

Here Deanna measures twice and nails once.

"A little to the left......no,no stage left!"

Art was oozing out of the gallery, whether it knew it or not.

Ashley and I decided to take a break form all the labor and cruise around the local brewery, Carlsberg.

Behind the brewery is what appeared to be a skate park.

Where local children made cute chalk drawings.

Ashley gave the course a run.

Here she pulls a frontside parka button down to fakie.

I saw that the turf was claimed by the Sk8 Rasta crew.

They must have been too high to skate that day.

We met back up with the Templetons and perused some more of Copenhagen, big and small.

Looks like facial hair is dominating some new terrain on faces over here.

Centrum Hotel, now with no fear.

Enough funny business, Copenhagen had a lot of beauty to offer.

Old churches were everywhere. Copenhagen is not very religious so they turn some of their old churches into what ever they want. This one was part restaurant part art space.

This guy is still along for the ride.

"What? Its a restaurant now? Do they offer a senior discount?"

We wondered our way into some Royal courtyard where the guards were apparently off duty. We played our American ignorance card and fooled around with the guard towers.

We are loving this place and that was only the first day.

I would always see this guy walking his dog in my neighborhood but never had a roll of color film in. I dont think he was psyched I took his photo. He didn't smile back at me.

Maybe I am not the only one but I think its funny when you are driving and you see some fabric of a ladys skirt caught in the door jam flapping in the wind.

I hopped on a Hollywood High session one day and just ended up staying outside the gate shooting people walking by. Note the skater's street gloves.
